Injection molding is a relatively new way to manufacture parts. It is a fast process and is used to produce large numbers of identical items from high precision engineering components to disposable consumer goods. Injection molding is often used in mass-production and prototyping. It produces such small products as bottle tops, sink plugs, children's toys, containers, model kits, disposable razors and parts of cameras. The process can even mould such large items as dingy hulls and kit car body shell parts. The advantages of injection molding are: high tolerances are repeatable, wide range of materials can be used, low labor costs, minimal scrap losses, little need to finish parts after molding. The disadvantages of injection molding are: expensive equipment investment, running costs may be high, parts must be designed with specific molding consideration.

Injection Molding is the most advanced typical method of molding rubber products. Injection molding produces the most consistent results by automating all aspects of how the rubber gets into the mold. In injection molding, the rubber is worked and warmed and then squirted into the mold at controlled speeds, pressures and temperatures. Advantages of Injection Molding are: Provides the maximum product consistency, Allows the most control of flash, Because the rubber is warmed before going into the mold, fastest cycle times, Disadvantages of Injection Molding.

Making polymers is a fantastic science. Then there is the matter of shaping the plastic into useful objects....another fantastic science. One of the most common methods of shaping plastic resins is a process called injection molding. Injection molding is accomplished by large machines called injection molding machines. A type of mold used in the process of injection molding. The mold usually comprises two sections held together by a clamping device with sufficient strength to withstand the pressure of the injected, molten plastic. The mold is provided with channels for heating, cooling and venting.

The wonderful thing about plastic injection molding is the low cost of the parts being produced when you need a large volume of parts. The downside is the cost of injection molding tooling. The toolings, or the molds, range in price anywhere from $2000 for a simple one, to over a hundred thousand dollars for a big and complex injection mold. The way the injection molders figured out how much to charge per part was to weigh the part complete with runner to determine how much plastic resin is used for each part. The size of the part determines what size injection molding machine must be used, and how big the mold is etc.

For homeowners who do not need a specific design recreated or reproduced, pre-made products are generally a far more cost-effective way to take advantage of plastic injection molding technology. Many companies offer a wide range of pre-made products made from plastic injection molding and chances are, you already own many of these products. One of the most common uses of the procedure for home building and design products is in making trim, ceiling medallions, crown moldings and similar decorative products. These products are often more durable, lightweight, and easier to install than wood, plaster, or other more traditional materials, yet can be stained or painted to have the same classic look. This is but one of the many possibilities for the versatile technology of plastic injections molding.
