The wonderful thing about plastic injection molding is the low cost of the parts being produced when you need a large volume of parts. The downside is the cost of injection molding tooling. The toolings, or the molds, range in price anywhere from $2000 for a simple one, to over a hundred thousand dollars for a big and complex injection mold. The way the injection molders figured out how much to charge per part was to weigh the part complete with runner to determine how much plastic resin is used for each part. The size of the part determines what size injection molding machine must be used, and how big the mold is etc.

For homeowners who do not need a specific design recreated or reproduced, pre-made products are generally a far more cost-effective way to take advantage of plastic injection molding technology. Many companies offer a wide range of pre-made products made from plastic injection molding and chances are, you already own many of these products. One of the most common uses of the procedure for home building and design products is in making trim, ceiling medallions, crown moldings and similar decorative products. These products are often more durable, lightweight, and easier to install than wood, plaster, or other more traditional materials, yet can be stained or painted to have the same classic look. This is but one of the many possibilities for the versatile technology of plastic injections molding.

Injection molding is a common method of producing intricate plastic components in high volume. Injection molds are made from hardened tool steel, although aluminum may be used for some low volume applications of injection molding. Injection molds can vary from simple open-shut injection molds, single cavity injection molds to complex multi-cavity injection molds with moving cores, stepped shut-offs, unscrewing devices. Due to the tonnage used in this high pressure process, proper materials, supports, parting line locks etc. must used to ensure the life of the mold. Cavities may be polished or textured to achieve a desired finish on the injection molded part.

Thermoplastic injection molding is the most widely used of all plastic processing methods. The injection molding machine reduces pelletized raw material and colorants into a hot liquid. This "melt" is forced into a cooled mold under tremendous pressure. After the material solidifies, the mold is unclamped and a finished part is ejected. Injection molding offers the lowest piece prices available, but tooling prices are generally the highest. Thermoset injection molding is similar to thermoplastic injection molding except that uncured thermoset resins are mixed, injected, and held in the mold until cured. As with thermoplastic molding, the price per piece can be low, but the tooling prices are generally very high.
